Geography and best places to visit in Spain

Spain is a nation in the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe (which it shares with Portugal). Although that peninsula contains most of its territory (80%), it also has a few islands. The Balearic Islands are located in the Mediterranean Sea off the coasts of Catalonia and Valencia. The Canary Islands are one of the other island nations; they are situated in the Atlantic Ocean about 932 miles south of the coast of Andalusia, on the peninsula. Additionally, Spain has two independent cities: Ceuta and Melilla. These cities are in northern Africa and have excellent ferry connections to the Andalusia coast. Madrid is the capital of Spain. The cities of Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, and Zaragoza are additionally significant.

Spain's topography

Spain is highly diverse and results in a wide range of landscapes, from arid regions to the greenest meadows. This nation has the most UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in the world because of its abundance of natural diversity. The center areas and the periphery of the earth have very different climates. The inner lands have hot summers with an average temperature of 75°F and chilly winters with an average temperature in January between 32 and 37.4 °F. With an average January temperature of 50 °F and an average annual temperature of 61 °F to 65 °F, the periphery regions experience moderate winters. The rain shows sharp contrasts. Under the direct impact of the Atlantic, the north and northwest are constantly rainy. The remaining Spanish territory is primarily dry, receiving less than 24 inches of rain annually. Spain's southeast region is semi-arid, with an annual rainfall of fewer than 12 inches and a semi-desert environment that occasionally resembles the Sahara.

Terrain

Most of the nation is made up of steep highlands divided by a number of mountain ranges, along with a variety of plateaus and rivers. Other regions include fertile plains, sandy beaches along the coasts, and rocky cliffs in certain places. The Andalusian Plain in the southwest, the Ebro Basin in the northeast, and the coastal lowlands are the main lowland areas. It can be challenging to comprehend mountain ranges' variety and sheer quantity, but there are several vital points to keep in mind. The Meseta Central is a large plateau in the very center of Spain that is surrounded by mountains on three sides and gently dips to the west, where rivers serve as part of the country's natural borders with Portugal.

The Sistema Central Mountain range, which also gives the north a somewhat greater altitude, divides the northern and southern halves of the plateau, with Madrid, the capital city, at its center. The Sierra Morena, the Cordillera Cantábrica, and the Sistema Ibérico are the mountain ranges surrounding Meseta Central. In Spanish culture and tradition, the term Sierra Morena is associated with legends involving bandits, a gigantic snake, and a child raised by wolves. The arid central plains and "Green Spain" to the north are sharply divided by the Cordillera Cantábrica, a haphazard collection of mountain ranges, massifs, plateaus, and depressions.

Natural resources

Iron ore, coal, copper, lignite, lead, uranium, tungsten, zinc, magnesite, fluorspar, mercury, pyrites, gypsum, kaolin, potash, sepiolite, hydropower, and fertile land are among Spain's essential natural resources.

Environment issues

Spain's principal environmental problems are:

  • Deforestation - Over the years, Spain's extensive forests have been devastated due to haphazard farming methods, forest fires, and uncontrolled harvesting. The government's attempts to implement forestry programs have yet to be very successful.
  • Air pollution - The repercussions of Spain's air pollution issue include acid rain, the thinning of the ozone layer, and the greenhouse impact. Spain ranked 20th internationally for industrial CO2 emissions in 1995, totaling 223.2 million Mt.
  • Water supply and quality around the country - Spanish waterways are contaminated by industrial and agricultural waste and oil tankers that approach the country's coastline. Due to the discharge of effluents and raw sewage, the Mediterranean Sea is contaminated.
  • Desertification threatens 36% of the country, with the Canaries and the southeast being the worst affected regions. However, some of this degradation is caused by climate change, natural occurrences, salinization, erosion, overgrazing, fire, and ineffective human management.
  • Saharan dust is sweeping over the Canary Islands and off the west coast of Africa (a Spanish archipelago).

Climate

Similar to the country's geography, the climate is complicated and diversified, and the weather dramatically differs by region. Spain has the widest variety of environments in all of Europe. The weather is generally warm, with overcast, mild summers and cool winters by the shore, scorching summers, and frigid winters inland. However, there are also primarily five distinct climatic zones that may be identified, including a warm-summer continental climate, an oceanic climate, a semi-arid climate, and a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. In the country's interior, Madrid experiences average summer highs of 31 °C and winter lows of 3 °C. Although the environment is undoubtedly unpredictable, temperatures are typically slightly warmer to the north and south of the cities at higher altitudes.
